Schuff steel is looking to grow our in house engineering department.  Candidates with a structural design background or field engineering will be considered.  This is a chance to become part of a core group and can lead to a leadership position in the future.  Training will be provided regarding high strength bolting, welding, minor steel detailing, and erection practices (cranes and rigging).  Primary tools used for this position is TEKLA Structures, AutoCAD, RISA structural engineering products.  Above all a positive attitude and the desire to progress professionally is required.  Schuff Steel has several licensed engineers on staff that can provide a reference when applying licensure.

Work closely with Construction Engineering staff and other department managers to provide support to all phases of project development and execution, including sales, pre-construction services, estimating, project management, detailing, QA/QC, safety, design assist/build, fabrication and erection. Develop Company-wide Engineering policies and procedures, as well as project specific guidelines and practices.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Provide Engineering support for Sales, Pre-Construction Services and Estimating teams during RFP stage. Review design documents for areas of impact relating to Purchasing, Fabrication, and Erection. Develop preferred details for review and incorporation with project team (Owner/Architect/Contractor/Schuff team) Provide engineering solutions for Project Management team as additional project requirements develop. Coordinate with Detailing to assure incorporation of any standards and engineering/stability items during modeling process. Provide QA/QC support and shop assistance during fabrication. Coordinate with Safety Department to design/develop systems as necessary, for projects. Develop temporary bracing/stability plans in coordination with Field Department, as well as any other project specific engineering documents. Develop and implement field erection aids (spreader beams, lifting lugs, etc.) Provide project wrap-up data for use in future work. Develop/Maintain details in detailing manual construction appendix in accordance with Schuff preferred details, QA/QC, Safety Departments, and Field/Shop input. Maintain membership in industry organizations (AISC, AWS, RCSC) and continued professional development. (Professional Engineering licensure).

Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited engineering school.  Engineer in Training license.  3-5 years' experience as a structural engineer performing typical design of steel, concrete, timber structures.      Working knowledge of building codes including but not limited to; IBC, CBC, ASCE7, AISC, and ACI.  Working knowledge of standard structural design and analysis software.  Primary use is RISA products but access to SAP, ETABS, Bentley Structural is available.  Typical Microsoft office products used as well.  Ability desire to pursue civil PE licensure.


Working knowledge and understanding of structural steel fabrication and erection. Additional background knowledge of Estimating, Safety, QA/QC will be considered. Working knowledge of applicable industry regulations and codes, including but not limited to; AWS, RCSC, AND OSHA. Working knowledge of standard structural design and analysis software.

EQUIPMENT USED Various office equipment is used such as personal computer, scanner, copier and fax.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS Work is performed in a climate controlled office, with some frequent plant and jobsite field visits. Road/air travel to remote sites, as required.
