The Lead QC Inspector brings his/her expertise and knowledge in fabrication to build some of the most complex and high profile projects in the commercial building, bridge and industrial sectors. Critical to the production process, this position inspects the work and supervises a team of inspectors to ensure the quality of welds and dimensional accuracy of work performed by production staff.  The Lead QC Inspector uses a high degree of proficiency while utilizing full skills of the trade including knowledge of NDT, codes and standards to verify that the final product is free of defects and meets the requirements of the contract documents. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each core responsibility satisfactorily.

Core Responsibilities

  • Provide direction for shop QC inspectors on every shift the Shop is running.
  • Maintain and update nonconformance log.
  • Maintain and update welder certifications.
  • Maintain calibration records for inspection equipment, including measuring tapes, weld gauges, volt meter, infrared thermometer, and NDT equipment.
  • Maintain welding unit calibration logs.
  • Provide assistance to shop inspectors for dimensional and final inspection to help maintain the flow of production.
  • Maintain and scan in daily inspection records for each project in the shop.
  • Perform review of contract documents prior to bid and post award to promote knowledge of customer requirements throughout the organization.


Education/Training - Work Experience

High School Diploma or equivalent and at least 5 years of related experience.

  • Completion of verifiable vocational or training program may substitute for one (1) year of experience.
  • Current or prior AWS-CWI, SCWI, or CWB in accordance with CSA W178.2 required.


Specialized Knowledge Certificates & Licenses

As outlined in the Core Competencies, an individual must have thorough knowledge and an advanced understanding of each competency outlined above in order to carry out the essential functions of this position.  Specialized Knowledge is also required in the following areas: 

  • Must hold a certification to perform Non Destructive Testing in accordance with AWS Structural Welding Code.
  • Knowledgeable of dimensional tolerances in accordance with the AISC Code of Standard Practice and AWS Structural Welding Codes.
  • Knowledgeable in requirements for inspection of high strength bolted connections in accordance with RCSC.
  • Ability to read and interpret structural steel blueprints;
  • Knowledge of AWS and AISC codes applicable to steel fabrication and erection;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of various methods of weld testing procedures


Software & Technology

Computer software includes: MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook and Kronos.

  • Frequently around fumes or airborne particles and extreme heat.

  • Occasionally climbing ladders/scaffolding and carrying heights in precarious places

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, color, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Mental and visual application required to interpret drawings, layout, and plan work.
  • Good judgment in determining best method and procedure to be followed.
  • Work on jobs while applying safety rules at all times. SAFETY is priority one at all times!!!
  • Constantly have the ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)  ((Hard Hat, Steel toed boots, Safety glasses, gloves, ear plugs, long pants, long sleeved shirt, respirator etc.. per requirements for position)
